De-centering is a widening of the scope of our focus, to shift the core of what we consider to be valuable. As America grapples with its racial past, an emphasis on anti-racism forces us to recognize ways in which a Euro-centric lens has been applied across industries, coloring what we deem worth studying, recognizing, memorializing. By casting a larger net for material to understand our social world, we simply expand our collective narrative to include perspectives from those that lived on the periphery of the American consciousness. It is a recognition that humans perceive racial, performative, gender, and sexuality cues, but how we react to those perceived differences shapes us as a society.
